Dry skin can become a host for other problems that can make regular skin care hard to maintain.

For years we've known that people with severe dry skin and eczema also frequently have allergic conditions such as asthma, hay fever and rhinitis. Whether the skin conditions and allergies are related has been unclear. However, scientists may have discovered a link: recent studies have shown that some people suffering from these types of allergies may be absorbing allergens through their damaged skin. This makes it all the more important to prevent dry skin, and to use eczema and dry skin care products that allow the skin to heal rather than causing further damage.

What products can we use that fit the bill? According to the study, published in Trends in Immunology, the protective layer of the skin is stripped by using harsh cleansing products or rubbing the skin excessively, not through "normal" washing. Based on that, you would think that all you have to do to keep the protective surface layer in tact is use mild products, gently. However, that is not the case. Even mild skin care products, including those labeled as specially formulated for eczema or dry skin, often contain chemicals that damage the skins surface layer. You don't have to use abrasives or treat the skin harshly to strip the protective layer, the chemicals will do it for you.

What is the solution? Using natural skin care products is the first step. Believe or not, many of the best products aren't found in stores, they're in your kitchen. Check the Internet for cleansing and skin care products you can make at home. It's fast, easy, inexpensive, and the ingredients aren't hard to find.

Since it's impossible to avoid all chemicals -- they're even in the air -- the second step is a shielding lotion. A good shielding lotion bonds with the skin to essentially replace the protective surface layer. This bond locks in natural moisture and keeps chemicals out. Hundreds of dermatologists recommend shielding lotion for dry skin and eczema. Unlike traditional creams and moisturizers, it doesn't just coat the skin with something slick, it actually allows the skin to heal.

As evidenced by the study, your skin is not the only organ harmed by chemicals. Effective treatment of dry skin and eczema is not just a cosmetic issue; your overall health is dependant on it.
