A: Try not to stress over it. While you may not be able to banish that zit for good, you can significantly reduce its size and appearance. Apply a clay mask to the spot and leave on overnight (or as long as you can, if it’s the day of the event). Look for masks formulated with ingredients like kaolin clay, bentonite clay, zinc, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. The clay will soak up excess oil and reduce the size of the spot. Then, ice the blemish for about 10 minutes to reduce swelling and apply a clear spot treatment like salicylic acid just before applying your makeup. Finish with a dot of concealer.

A: Its’ best to give your face time to recover from masks, which can leave the skin sensitive and red. Give yourself at least two days. If it’s a brand new product, give it a week to make sure your skin doesn’t develop any adverse reactions.

A: Because indoor tanning isn’t safe for your skin (check out our article on its dangers, here, it’s best to use self-tanner. You’ll want to try out the tanner well in advance to ensure the color is right for you. Also, see if the formula leaves any streaks. Before applying self-tanner, make sure you exfoliate the skin. If you apply too much tanner, use soap and water to wash it off. For areas like the ankles or knees, dip a cotton ball in nail polish remover, and wipe off the excess.

A: The eyes are one of the first places to age, so it doesn’t hurt to start using an eye cream right now. Just make sure it includes sunscreen, so you shield your eyes from sun damage and premature wrinkles.
