A: Try to find a photo of an updo you’d like to copy. For a classic look, try a curly updo. First, using a curling iron, curl all of the hair on your head. Then, pin the hair up section by section, looking at the shape as you go. Distribute curls evenly, making sure not to pile up the curls in one section. Finally, use lots of pins and hairspray to keep the style in place.

A: While longer-lasting, expensive extensions are available, you can put extensions in just for the night. You can buy them yourself, or arrange for your stylist to buy them. Extensions come in all textures, colors and lengths imaginable. Some are human hair, some synthetic. Tuttle suggests the less expensive, synthetic, metal clip kind. Your stylist can fasten them in when styling your hair.

A: Communicating with your stylist during the process will save you both time and energy. “I redo hair, but I’d rather know how you feel while I’m styling, not after,” Tuttle explains. “I work piece by piece, building a style, and ask ‘Are you liking this?’ Or ‘Do you want this bigger or smaller?’”
