Wouldn't it be great to sit down with a panel of experts and have them advise you all about the basics of healthy skin? Well, thankfully, you can have an article that does the same, from Science Daily.

Here are six valuable facts.

1. You may not need all those fancy shower gels and soaps. That's because water is all that's required to get you clean, except for areas like your face, underarms and groin area, according to Brian B. Adams, MD, MPH, FAAD, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Cincinnati and director of dermatology, Veterans Administration Medical Center. Unless you have particularly oily skin or work with oils, skip the soaps, which as you get older, can really dry out your skin.

2. How can you prevent premature aging and dehydrated and lackluster skin? Stop smoking, says Flor A. Mayoral, MD, FAAD, clinical instructor at the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, which if you continue, can lead to deep wrinkles around the mouth from puckering.

3. Another effective ant-aging antidote? Sunscreen! Sandra I. Read, MD, FAAD, instructor of dermatology at Georgetown University School of Medicine recommends using lotions with built-in SPF 15 (or higher) for your face and body.

4. Your skin is what you eat, so feed it a diet full of antioxidants and vitamins for a healthy, glowing appearance, says Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and at the School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.

5. Don't do much with your hair, cosmetically speaking, suggests Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD, who holds a private practice in North Carolina. Hair treatments like coloring, perms and straightening can cause the hair to look unhealthy and dull over time.

6. Consult with your dermatologist for the latest in skin care to achieve a natural youthful appearance and healthy skin, says Arielle N.B. Kauvar, MD, FAAD, clinical associate professor of dermatology at New York University School of Medicine. She names everything from cosmetic non-invasive procedures like combining laser therapy with Botox to health-related treatments like photodynamic therapy to get rid of precancerous growths.
