According to an article on smartskincare.com, product failure is often a direct result of incorrect application. If you're skeptical, consider how a topical skin care product works.

There are two parts to a cream, gel or lotion. First and foremost are the active ingredients. Skin care products also contain inactive ingredients, which are designed to protect and deliver the active ingredients. Obviously, if the active ingredients aren't effective, the product is not going to work. The second factor in product success is whether the active ingredient is able to penetrate deeply and sufficiently into the skin to be effective, which is related directly to how you are applying the product.

The skin's ability to absorb topical treatments depends on factors such as temperature, hydration, and environment, to name a few. The article mentions a few key techniques that will ensure optimal penetration of your skin care products.

  1. Cleansing first is crucial, especially if you have applied other products to your face. Wash with warm, not hot, water, and with a moisturizing formula instead of regular bar soap.
  2. The best time to apply any skin care product is right after you shower, when your skin is moist, as the product will have a better chance of penetration. Don't wipe your face dry if you are going to apply a skin care product - just pat it gently with a soft towel.
  3. Another reason to apply products just after you shower is that warm skin absorbs ingredients better than cool skin. If your skin is cold, apply a warm towel for a few minutes to moisten and warm the skin.
  4. Especially in aging skin, the uppermost layer can become thick and full of dry, dead cells. Regular exfoliation will help break up this layer, allowing products to be absorbed into the skin. It is best to be cautious when it comes to exfoliation, as overdoing it can cause irritation. Use a mild facial scrub containing an exfoliating ingredient such as alpha hydroxy acids or enzymes, and do not use more than four times per week.
  5. Skin care products should be applied gently, using short, firm strokes. The middle finger allows an ideal amount of pressure. Be careful not to stretch or rub the skin. Once you have applied the product, tap gently for a few seconds to help the product penetrate.

If after trying these suggestions you find that the product still doesn't help you achieve your desired results, it may be time to switch products. However, if you have already tried several products without success, it may be time to visit a dermatologist for further suggestions.
