FAQs

Q: I love displaying pretty perfume bottles in my bathroom – but it’s very sunny. Are there any secrets to extending the life of the perfume – without hiding them in the dark?

A: Perfume designers do make it difficult to hide the beautiful bottles! In fact, displaying a collection of your favorite perfume bottles can make a gorgeous design statement in your bedroom or bathroom. Consider decanting the perfume into a different bottle (this can be tricky with certain designs). Or, if you apply perfume daily, go ahead and display them. If the smell starts to change after a few years, simply leave it on display and replace with a new bottle (and keep this one in the dark).

Q: I recently bought my husband a bottle of cologne because I fell in love with the aroma. Is it a beauty faux pas to dab a bit on now and then?

A: Not at all! In fact, California perfumer Mandy Aftel tells the Los Angeles Times that, marketing and packaging aside, most fragrances are, in reality, unisex. She explains that “when men get to choose what fragrances they like purely from smell, they'll often include florals, and women will choose to include something tobacco-y and woodsy.” So, go ahead and dab on your partner’s perfume.

Q: Does perfume expire?

A: If kept in a cool, dark place, most perfumes will last around two years, so resist the temptation to put them on display on a sunny countertop or dresser. Light and heat can cause them to “spoil” more quickly, which is evident when the scent begins to change.

Q: There are so many types of fragrances (perfume, eau de parfum, etc.). What’s the difference among them?

A: The major difference lies in the concentrations. Perfumes have the highest potency, containing 20 to 40 percent of fragrance oils, and last the longest after application. Eau de parfum contains seven to 14 percent fragrance oils, while eau de toilette contains one to three percent fragrance oils, bringing lighter aromas that don’t linger as long.

In search of a new fragrance to round out your summer beauty routine? From citrusy body splashes to perfumes so fragrant they smell fresh-picked from the garden, we’ve got the ideal hot weather scent for everyone’s taste and style.

When it comes to fragrances, summer inspires a different set of scents. Swap the deep woodsy and spicy aromas for those that reflect the essence of the hot weather season. From a quenching glass of lemonade to a sweet bloom of star jasmine, summer is the time for light, fresh scents that complement long days and sultry nights. Read on for our top fragrance picks for her, for him and for the home.

Picking a summer-y scent

When picking a new perfume, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by all of the choices. Understanding how different fragrances are characterized can make the selection a bit simpler. About.com beauty writer Catherine Helbig points out several common fragrance categories; here are the ones are ideal for hot weather:

  • Citrus: Energizing, crisp aromas like lemon, lime, grapefruit and orange
  • Floral: Sweet and sensual blends of blossoms including rose, lily and wildflowers
  • Fruity: Refreshing and uplifting notes ranging from plums and peaches to berries of all kinds
  • Green: Fresh cut grass, leafy greens and garden herbs like basil and lemongrass
  • Oceanic: Crisp, clean aromas that mimic breezy mountain air and ocean spray

Still attached to your signature cold weather fragrance? While woody aromas like cedar and patchouli are often associated with winter, lighter earthy aromas with milky undertones are ideal for summer. Allure recommends coconut and sandalwood.

Also keep in mind that most perfumes don’t fall under one category. Some fragrances will feature just one major category (i.e. citrus), while others will combine two or more (i.e. rose and lemon) for a layered, more complex scent. Whatever you choose, remember to keep your application on the lighter side. Warm summer air will strengthen the smell of your scent.
