Autumn brings more than cool weather and beautiful fall colors – it also brings a new batch of makeup trends, styles and shades. Read on for the best advice on how to switch up your fall beauty routine.

So long summer: How to tweak fall makeup

When the weather cools off, it’s important to change up your makeup routine. But, before you start reaching for the latest shades and styles, remember that it’s most important to start with a healthy base. If your skin type changes from summer to fall, be sure to switch up your skin care routine. Most often, as the climate shifts to cool and crisp, skin becomes dry. Swap your light summer moisturizer with an emulsifying formula. In addition to moisturizing, don’t forget to exfoliate twice a week. By exfoliating from head to toe, you slough away the dead skin cells that make your appearance look dull, and expose the fresh, radiant skin beneath.

Fresh faces

Just as the seasons change, your skin type also slightly alters. While summer skin might be oily, fall skin tends to get dry and flaky from the cooler weather. Pay attention to how your skin changes and prepare accordingly. If you’ve been using a cleansing gel with acne-fighting ingredients, it might be time to add a creamy and moisturizing cleanser to your morning routine.

Next, swap your summer makeup kit with formulas and shades that are inspired by the season’s latest trends.

  • Foundation: If you skipped foundation during the steamy hot days of summer, it’s time to take it back out. A clean, clear complexion is the perfect canvas for every look this fall. If your skin tends to dry out a bit with the cooler, drier air that autumn brings, opt for an oil-based foundation. Be sure to match your color closely, as your pale spring complexion probably darkened a bit over the summer months.
    • Product pick: For a not-to-heavy full coverage foundation, try Jane Iredale Liquid Minerals - Golden Glow. This unique formula is blended with mineral extracts and aloe vera to help lock in moisture for skin that looks and feels healthier and more even all day long.
  • Blush: Color your cheeks with rosy reds and peach pinks this fall. Be adventurous with placement and consider a streak across the upper or lower part of your cheekbones.
  • Lids. Gold has always been a girl’s best friend; now add this stylish shade to your makeup bag. For the bold and brave, layer your lids with shimmery gold hues and add a few extra sweeps of your brush for a more vibrant, sultry look. Celebrity makeup artist Carmindy adds that using a cream topped with a powder formula can also add some intensity. For minimalists, there are also gorgeous matte shades of gold. Experiment with copper undertones, too.
  • Liner. For a super chic look, think winged cat eyes for the fall. Simply pencil the upper lid with a sloping line of thick, dusky liner. Harper’s Bazaar adds that aqua blue liner across the top lid makes a chic statement. For the minimalists among us, simply coat the inner rims with white pigment for a fresh, trendy highlight of the eyes.
  • Lashes. Forget the rules when it comes to dramatic lashes. Thick, clumpy lashes are all the rage. If soft, subtle lashes are more your style, go for a short, spidery look that’s also been seen on the runways.
    • Product pick: Transform your lashes with Stila Major Major Lash Mascara - Black . This long-lasting formula boosts your lashes for a fuller, more vibrant appearance that lasts all day and all night.
  • Brows. Strong, bold brows are being embraced for the fall. So skip the tweezers and let your brows thicken. Fill in any sparse areas with a powder or pencil.
  • Product pick: TALIKA Eyebrow Extender Light Brown is an advanced, easy to use solution for filling in over-plucked eyebrows. Simply apply as needed for eyebrows that appear naturally thicker.
  • Lips. Paint your pucker with red – merlot, ruby, copper, crimson and all shades in between. Fruit-inspired hues of cantaloupe and watermelon in matte or shiny textures will also make your lips pop.
  • Also, don’t be fooled by the cool autumn air – don’t skip the SPF. Sun or snow, always protect your pout with an SPF balm.

    • Product pick: DuWop Pure Venom Pure Berry Lip Stain embodies the red-inspired shades of the season. This all-natural and mostly organic lip stain paints and plumps your pucker for a show-stopping smile.
  • Nails. Bold manicures with metallic shades of silver, copper and gold are fall’s favorite trend. Harper’s Bazaar reports that bold shades of yellow are also a welcome look this fall. Choose matte hues that sparkle, or for a more subtle effect, opt for sheer shades. And file down your long nails for a short look that’s neat and clean. Match your nails with your eye makeup for an extra-chic look.

Finish with fragrance

Now that you’re in tune with fall’s trendiest colors and shades, take some time to find a fragrance that’s autumn appropriate. Swap summer’s light citrus and floral scents with warm, spicy aromas that better complement the season’s favorite shades. Fall fragrances feature vanilla, sandalwood and patchouli undertones in addition to coffee, spice, woody amber and musk.

All about autumn

It’s easy to remember the season’s trendiest shades – just fill your palette with the colors of your favorite autumn leaves. Copper, yellow and reds of all kinds mixed with some gold or peachy hues are sure to freshen up your look this fall season.
