With all the natural and eco-friendly products available these days, it’s easier than ever to find effective formulas suited for a child’s delicate skin. From baby wipes to hair detanglers, here are 10 products that swap chemical additives, artificial colors and scents for natural extracts and organic ingredients.
You might assume that all baby products contain fewer chemicals, but according to Dr. Tanya Remer Altmann for WedMD, many products have additives that are potential irritants or allergens. Though some babies won’t have a reaction to these additives, others may develop skin conditions. Incorporating products formulated with purer and gentler ingredients is a great idea for your little ones.
Set your children on the path to healthy skincare by starting with these 10 essential products.
Five products for babies:
- Shampoo and wash. Try Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Tear-Free Shampoo and Wash for an all-in-one product. It contains ingredients to cleanse, moisturize, soothe and soften baby’s skin. And, this formula is over 98 percent natural and contains no parabens or phthalates – ingredients that some experts say you should skip when it comes to infant skincare.
- Baby oil. Keep baby’s skin super soft with Badger Baby Oil with Organic Chamomile and Calendula. This mildly scented oil contains chamomile, calendula, jojoba oil and extra virgin olive oil, and is ideal to protect delicate skin from drying out – including adult skin!
- Lotion and eczema treatment. California Baby’s Calming Botanical Moisturizing Cream is not only good if your child suffers from eczema; this deeply hydrating and hypoallergenic cream is also ideal for adults with sensitive skin.
- Baby wipes. For the tender diaper region, look for baby wipes that don’t contain alcohol, chlorine or fragrances that can dry out baby’s skin and lead to diaper rash or other irritations. Elements Naturals 100% Natural and Compostable Unscented Baby Wipes are fragrance-free and perfect for those sensitive baby bottoms. They’re also made from plant oils and are completely compostable.
- Diaper rash treatment. If a diaper rash breaks out, try Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Diaper Ointment. It’ll calm your baby’s sensitive skin with vitamins A and E, chamomile, sweet almond oil and beeswax.
Five products for kids:
- Sunscreen. Sunscreen is imperative to protect your child’s delicate skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Try a sunscreen like California Baby Sunscreen SPF 30. It’s water resistant and suitable for babies, children and adults with sensitive skin. And not only is it tear-free, but it’s also free of fragrance, nut oils, gluten, soy, oat and dairy.
- Bubble bath. When your child discovers the wonders of a good bubble bath, look for a product that’s gentle and soothing. While fruity scents and fragrances might seem kid-friendly, these additives can be irritating to sensitive skin. Little Twig Organic Extra Mild Unscented Bubble Bath contains organic ingredients and a moisturizing blend of aloe vera, vitamin E and jojoba.
- Bug repellent. Don’t let your kids become a buffet for hungry mosquitoes on those warm summer evenings. Arm them with a natural repellant like BabyGanics Shoo Fly Bye, Deet Free Natural Insect Repellant. This Deet-free formula contains a mixture of soybean, peppermint, geranium and citronella oils to keep the bugs away, without that strong chemical smell typically associated with repellents.
- Hair detangler. Whether your child has angelic curls or the locks of a wild child, you can tame that hair with Kiss My Face Kids Detangler Creme, an effective detangler without any artificial fragrances or colors. Just spray it on wet or dry hair and comb through the tangles – no tears required.
- Hand soap. Your kids will love washing their hands with Jason Natural Cosmetics Kids Only Berry Burst Foaming Hand Soap. Children will like the delicious berry scent and the bottle marked “Kids Only!,” while parents can appreciate the tear-free, natural and organic ingredients – such as grapefruit peel and orange oil.
Keep your child’s fragile skin and hair healthy while staying away from harsh chemicals. Help your child make good choices now, and you’ll instill habits that’ll continue in the years to come.
