You’ve put away your heavy coats and umbrellas until next fall rolls around, which means that soon you won’t have to worry about shielding your hairstyles from wind and rain any longer. So with sunny skies and summer clothes on the horizon, give these five easy and stylish hairstyles a try.

This season, there are plenty of popular textures and fashions to play with when it comes to your hair. “Textured, matte hair looks really modern and sexy right now,” explains Redken Creative Consultant Guido Palau to Elle magazine. “It’s a little more unkempt and rock ’n’ roll, so it has a certain ease.”

These five hairstyles offer you a variety of options to accent everything from your work outfits to nightlife ensembles. In just a few steps, learn how you can easily create this summer’s hottest hair trends.

  1. Ride the teased waves. For a carefree summer look, go for relaxed, messy waves with mega volume:
    • Blow-dry your locks using a large, round brush, such as Frederic Fekkai Large Round Brush. Create volume at the roots by pulling your hair up and away from your head as you dry.

    • Let your hair cool, and then brush through the curls to create a messy, casual look.

  2. Beautiful half-up bouffant. High volume hairstyles are popular, whether you sport a wavy updo or a high pompadour. Try the half-up, half-down version of the quintessential bouffant for a look that’s retro-chic.
  3. Before styling, wash your hair and apply a light, leave-in conditioner and a volumizing spray, such as Oscar Blandi Volume Spray, then blow-dry.

    • Use a large iron to set the curls at the top of your head and a medium-sized iron for curling locks along the sides.

    • Brush your hair gently with a mixed-bristle hairbrush to create soft, voluminous curls.

  4. The ponytail with panache. Low or high, the ponytail is back in style. Try one of these versions for a simple, functional and sophisticated look:
    • Dress up an ordinary updo by pulling your hair back into a low ponytail, then incorporating artfully placed clips or hairpins.

  5. Lovely woven locks. Braids are one of the most versatile styles. Whether you want them loose or tight, large or small, here are a few looks to try:
    • Change up a French braid by plaiting your hair into an S-shape or zigzag that begins above your forehead and ends at your neck.

    • Plait one small braid, less than an inch thick, along your hairline. This look works best if you part your hair on the side and braid the side that has the most hair. French braid the hair all the way to your neck and then put your hair into a low, side ponytail at that point. Finish the braid so you have one long lock and secure it with a small elastic band. The braid will stand out and adds texture to your look.

    • Add some romance to your ordinary French braids by first curling your hair to create loose waves. Then, create a loose braid on each side of your head, and pull them together into a low ponytail.

  6. The classic bun. Hair buns are trendy, timeless and easy to achieve. Try this high-knotted bun for a chic, ballerina-inspired look:
    • Apply a frizz-fighting mousse from root to end on clean, damp hair.

    • Smooth hair back into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic band.

    • Wind the hair into an oval knot. Styling your hair into an oval rather than a circle will “soften the overall look,” Marcus Francis, Hilary Duff’s stylist, tells In Style magazine.

Don’t forget to protect your hair from harsh UV rays – especially if your hair is color treated – with a product like Frederic Fekkai Coiff leave-in conditioner that’ll protect your locks from thermal styling and UV rays. And if you need to repair your hair after a day in the sun, try Redken UV Rescue After-Sun Conditioner.

This summer, remember to dress up your hair when you get dressed. Make it look like you just stepped out of ballet rehearsal with a high-knotted bun, or like you just hopped off your bicycle by embracing a textured, wavy look. Change up your everyday look this summer with one of these fun and fashionable hairstyles.
