Every season has its signature shades, and this fall, the trends are bold, deep and rich. While you should never be a slave to beauty trends, it’s fun to find out what’s hot this season and then interpret the looks in your own way, for your complexion, style and skin type. Without further ado, here are five great picks for fall.

  1. DuWop Private Red Lipstick. A red pout is all the rage for fall, but it’s also a beautiful classic look that continues to endure. While there’s a red for every woman, it isn’t always easy to find a shade that matches your skin tone and style. This DuWop lipstick has the unique ability to turn into every woman’s ideal lipstick hue. The vibrant red pigment alters within five minutes to complement any skin tone. Just remember to keep the rest of the face simple with neutral eye shadow and peachy cheeks.

  2. bareMinerals Liner Shadow in Midnight Sky. The eyes are also making a big statement this season (just make sure not to play up your eyes and lips simultaneously). Colorful eye shadow shades look beautiful and enhance the eyes. This deep cobalt color offers tons of drama when you wear it wet, but it also becomes a pretty, more subtle shade when worn dry.

  3. Stila Eye Shadow Trio Pan, Going Green. Deep, rich greens are another way to interpret the bold look this fall. This palette features three green hues: a base, crease and liner. This way, you can create a variety of looks. You can also try a darker shade of forest green, which is "chic and sophisticated on everyone," explains makeup artist Dick Page in Allure. According to the magazine, you can “Apply a golden moss-colored shadow over the lids, diffusing it as you get up toward the brow bones.” Then complete the look with a few swipes of black mascara.

  4. Origins Eyeshadow, Amethyst. Being bold doesn’t have to mean being daring or shocking; it can be a subtle surprise, too. So if you tend to gravitate toward brown and beige, change up your routine by trying a lavender eye shadow with gray undertones. Origins Eyeshadow in Amethyst provides a faint splash of color. This is a great way to look polished and sophisticated during the day, without feeling like your look is too dramatic. If you have dark skin, though, avoid lavender shades that are too pale, Page tells Allure, because they look frosty on your skin. Plus, they can wash out the complexion.

  5. NARS Satin Lipstick, Afghan Red. In addition to brighter lipstick shades, dark hues are also beautiful. This longwearing satin formula is a stunning shade of garnet. Deeper shades like these are perfect for darker skin. Before applying dark shades, you’ll want to exfoliate your lips to remove any flaking, says Page. He suggests simply using a cleansing wipe. And again, keep the rest of your makeup minimal.

There are many other bold colors you might want to try. For the lips, there’s saturated oranges — or sheer orange lip gloss to keep it understated, suggests makeup artist Carmindy — and rich berry hues, like burgundy. Eye shadow-wise, try plums, eggplants, grays and even fuchsia. And remember that when trying out trends, it’s best to take the trend and translate it to your style. Like Carmindy says on her beauty blog on Daily Makeover, “ …just because a trend is walking down the runway and photographed on models' faces, this does not mean it is necessarily right for you, too. The key is to choose one or two trends that do work for your specific features and don't take them literally, but rather use them as inspiration for a look that is wearable.”

A: Bold lipstick is definitely the big statement this season. Beauty experts gave the following tips to Stylist for creating a bold pout: For starters, exfoliate your lips since lipstick can accentuate the dry spots on your lips, and then apply Vaseline. Next, use a pencil to line your lips, which helps the lipstick stay on longer. If you’re a lipstick beginner, use a lip brush to apply the lipstick to your entire mouth. To avoid feathering, start applying the lipstick at the center of your lower lip. Then remove any lipstick from the brush with a tissue and use the clean brush to blend to the outer edges. To remove any excess, relax your lips and put a tissue between them; then blot from left to right with your index finger. Finish off with a clear gloss on the lips and pink blush (keep it low-key, though).
A: Overall, you want to look for creamier and gentler formulas. Avoid using soap and foaming cleansers because they can strip your skin of natural moisture. The body needs moisture just as much so consider swapping out your regular body cleanser for a creamy body wash and an overall ointment. Also, invest in an antioxidant serum, which neutralizes skin-damaging free radicals.
A: There are many pout products you can try that are more subtle and natural looking than fire engine-red lips. Your best bet is to buy a red lip gloss. NUXE Lip Gloss Prodigieux Nutri-Protector Lip Gloss – Charismatic Red plumps the lips and imparts a glossy effect. Plus, it contains mango and shea butter to deeply hydrate the lips and offers SPF 15. Philosophy Kiss Me SPF 20 Lip Balm Red also protects, hydrates and nourishes the lips, while adding a pretty color to your pout. And finally, Korres Lip Butter – Wild Rose, a paraben, sulfate and petro-chemical free formula, is a sheer deep red that features shea butter and rice wax to hydrate and smooth the lips.
A: Sure! Here are a couple great and diverse options: Stila Eye Shadow Pan - Wisteria, a bright shimmering purple; Stila Eye Shadow Pan – Cassis, a shimmering royal purple; DuWop Smoke Plum Wine, a different take on the plum trend, which leans more toward burgundy; Laura Geller Baked Marble Eye Shadow Amethyst, a combination of light pink and lavender; and POP Beauty Eye Shaper Palette, which features a variety of purples and grays.
A: Makeup artist Pat McGrath gives the following tips in Allure for creating a lovely complexion: First, be sure to exfoliate and hydrate your skin. Rub foundation between your fingers, and apply to any redness or darkness on your face, neck and chest. Dab matte concealer under your eyes and around your noses, but use a pointed brush to cover up dark spots. Use a creamy highlighter — the same shade as your skin tone — on the “cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the brow bones, the eyes' inner corners, the Cupid's bow, and the chin,” according to the magazine. McGrath says that you don’t have to apply powder but if you do, just dust it over your T-zone. Leaving the cheeks powder-less gives your skin a dewy and luminous look.
