While the runway is often the place for high cosmetic drama, this spring, designers’ requests stayed mainly on the straight and narrow. When color was introduced, choices for eyes and lips were bold: dark, intense brows with pale cheeks and lips or dark lips with muted brows. Eye color was just as theatrical with shimmering metallic shades of lavender and khaki, orange-reds, corals and sheer, florescent pinks. Go behind the scenes of this spring’s runway shows and discover how to bring these beauty trends home.
- Trend: Violets and pinks take the lead. At Versace and Michael Kors, models wore brightly colored shadows like velvety violet, which played romantically against their loosely swept hair in long lengths. No less dramatic was makeup artist James Kaliardos’ adventurous palette of pinks and corals for Diane Von Furstenberg’s bohemian spring line.
Try it: These warm shades come into play just in time for summer, ushering in vibrant, sun-kissed skin. To get the look, experiment with a variety of hues in pinks, corals and violets until you find a color palette that complements your skin tone. Those with olive skin tones look great in violets and corals while subtle pinks and peaches naturally enhance fair skin.
- Trend: Metallic shades play a starring role. Makeup artist Pat McGrath chose bold steel gray colors for models’ mascara-free eyes at Donna Karan, which brightened and enhanced the eyes. Shimmering metallic shadows were also popular at Chanel, especially under the eyes or near the tear ducts to reflect light.
Try it: To achieve the same show-stopping look for daytime, try icy eye shadows and pencils with just a touch of shimmer and sparkle to reflect light. Cool shimmering pinks and subtle metallic shades in khaki and gray keep the focus on your peepers. To experiment, try bareMinerals Glimmer Eye Shadow in Nude Beach or True Gold, two skin-flattering shades for every day. Keep colors soft so there’s no chance of overdoing it.
- Trend: Blushers get upstaged. Nude skin tones made a comeback at this season’s runways. Indeed, more and more, makeup artists are forgoing traditional blushers, opting instead to enhance natural skin tones with bronzers in shades of warm beige and brown. Also, translucent powders provide plenty of options for emphasizing cheekbone contours.
Try it: For an equally subtle and natural look, try Philosophy’s Supernatural Air Brushed Canvas in beige and bronze. It provides superior coverage for a flawless complexion without feeling heavy, which is perfect for warm weather.
- Trend: Dramatic brows steal the show. Some of the most theatrical looks appeared on the runways at Marc Jacobs and Diane Von Furstenberg. Marc Jacobs’ makeup artist François Nars focused on pale skin tones and painted brows. Intense, darkened brows were also on view at Vera Wang. Playing against fair skin finished in shimmering powders, models’ deeply shaded brows called attention to the eyes in ways that were both dramatic and alluring.
Try it: To amp up your own brows, first make sure that they’re well groomed. Next, try skipping your traditional brow pencil for a matte shadow that’s one or two shades darker than your natural brow color. With a pointed applicator, darken each brow slightly with the shadow of your choice. For even greater definition, use a liquid formula, but do so sparingly.
- Trend: Bright eyes go brighter. At Ralph Lauren, the focus was on the eyes. Makeup artist Tom Pecheux used white eyeliner pencil along the inner eyes to brighten them. He kept the skin cool and dewy by covering models’ complexions in light foundation. For the finishing touch, Pecheux applied transparent gloss to the lips, a fresh and flawless look that’s easy to replicate at home in just minutes.
Try it: First, avoid heavy foundation. Instead, lightly cover any problem areas with a concealer that closely matches your skin tone. Choose a bright eyeliner pencil in ivory and lightly outline the tops and bottom of your outer eyes from corner to corner. Finish by dusting your entire face in translucent powder and covering lips with clear gloss.
- Trend: Cleopatra cat eyes go cosmic. Cat eyes are so graphic, but they can seem dated. To update the look for Marc Jacobs, makeup artist François Nars applied dark brown and black liners to eyes prepared in matte white. Nars extended the lines beyond both the inner and outer corners for a modern take on a look that’s an old favorite. So they didn’t compete with the drama, brows were concealed in a light foundation.
Try it: Cat eyes are a great evening look. Using a precision-tip black eyeliner, join the lines from the top and bottom of the eye with the outer corners to create a wing effect – a look that was also featured at Oscar de la Renta.
- Trend: Lip tints and stains take center stage. Lip stains and tints offer long-lasting color while being weightless. Makeup artist James Kaliardos focused on models’ lips as the main feature for Rodarte, creating unique shades of deep red wine outlined in tones of near black with bare eyes and nude skin. Pat McGrath produced a similar look for Dolce & Gabbana with lips in rich merlot set against glistening, sheer shadows. She skipped blush altogether and opted instead for beige powders to accentuate cheeks and jawbones.
Try it: To get custom lip colors at home, consider Stila Lip Glaze The Sweet Six and mix and match to your heart’s content. Lip stains, tints and glazes are typically lighter in color on the lips than in the container, so feel free to go a little darker.
- Trend: Smoky eyes get an encore. Subtle earth tones — whether used over or under the eyes, or in a smoky combination — dominated the catwalks at Chanel. Makeup artist Peter Philips lightly accented lips in sheer hues of peach and pink.
Try it: To get this look, start with a basic black eyeliner around the eyes; then, with a small brush, add a layer of shadow on top and under the eyes for a sexy, sultry effect. Finish with your favorite mascara. For lips, add a lip stain, or try a transparent matte balm that matches your natural lip color. To achieve this look on the go, try an all-in-one kit such as bareMinerals Get Started Eye Kit.
- Trend: Minimalism gets rave reviews. Minimalism reigned supreme on the DKNY catwalk. Models wore slicked-back ponytails and barely-there makeup with just a hint of color on the cheekbones, eyes or lips.
Try it: To get the look, first make sure your skin is well moisturized. Then, apply a bronzer or powder to enhance your natural tone by one or two shades. After, accentuate your best feature with a punchy color palette – but keep it light. According to Allure magazine, orange-red lips are hot this season, but to pull off that blast of color, you have to tone down everything else, including your brows.
- Trend: Shimmering skin is back in the spotlight. At the Carolina Herrera show, makeup artist Diane Kendal enhanced natural skin tones by highlighting them with a transparent shimmering powder. This simple application looks super fresh for spring.
Try it: Today, you’ll find plenty of beauty products with light-catching ingredients, such as translucent powders, crème and powder blushers, eye pencils and shadows. A little shimmer can go a long way, though, so even if it’s not full-on glitter, use products sparingly for the best effect. Try shimmering powder blush-highlighter hybrids in shades of nude, pink and rosy beige.
This season, don’t hesitate to try a new look. Getting your inspiration from the catwalks is one fashion-forward way to experiment. Go for bold color, like a fresh take on red lips or smoky, khaki eyes. Try shimmery formulas that enhance your skin. And always remember that your color palette is only as limited as your imagination.
