You’ve spent hours selecting your dress and scouring magazines for the perfect hair tips and accessories. Fortunately, finding the right makeup doesn’t have to be so difficult. Here are some suggestions for creating a pretty look for prom.

Face

If your skin is on the oily side and you’re worried that your makeup might melt by midnight, use makeup primer on your face and eyelids (you can also get a separate lid primer) before applying any color to lock pigments in place. Try Colorescience Crème de la Crème Foundation Primer All Dolled Up, a vitamin-rich, lightweight primer. Or, consider Philosophy Never Let Them See You Shine Primer to reduce oil and shine.

Next, focus on foundation and concealer. For a fresh, shine-free complexion, opt for a lightweight, sheer formula to even skin tone and minimize imperfections, such as Stila Illuminating Liquid Foundation. If you need extra coverage to hide dark circles or blemishes, apply (http://www.skinstore.com/store/category.asp?catID=7156) Philosophy Supernatural Concealer with a concealer brush and blend thoroughly.

Eyes and lips

Prom night is the perfect time to experiment with bold, smoky eyes or a vivid and dramatic pout — but not both. Accentuating just one feature creates a beautiful, modern look without appearing over-done, or worse, clown-like. Sweep dramatic shadows like royal blue, deep purple, onyx or silver onto the eyes. Apply a thin layer of black liner. Complete the look by adding just a touch of nude lipstick, like DuWop Liplingo Nude Palette, and top with pink gloss to keep lips soft and romantic.

If you prefer to keep eyes simple, opt for a vibrant red or mauve pout. Choose neutral eye shadow colors such as gold, pink and brown. DuWop Eye Palettes feature coordinated base, shimmer and liner colors for subtle yet gorgeous eyes.

Cheeks

Give cheeks a healthy flush by applying an oil-free, cream-based blush or cheek stain that won’t streak or fade throughout the night like ordinary powder blushes. Try Illuminare Perfect Color Blush, which you can also use on the eyes and lips. For a sun-kissed look, sweep bronzer over your cheekbones. Lancaster Easy Face Bronzer Brush is a liquid bronzer that leaves skin naturally radiant and glowing.

Finishing touch

For added staying power long after the clock strikes twelve, dust on a light layer of Dermablend Loose Setting Powder to keep your makeup smudge-proof and fresh. Finally, be sure to pack some beauty essentials in your purse for quick touch-ups, including: lip gloss, hand lotion, concealer, mascara and oil blotting papers.

Skincare tips

Before applying your makeup, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Continue cleansing and moisturizing your face morning and night. Healthy, clear skin provides the best foundation for prom night beauty.

  • As tempting as it may be to primp with the girls the night before with a facial or new product, don’t! Facials can stir up changes in the skin, leaving your skin red and splotchy. Some facials can even cause you to break out. Instead, schedule a facial two to three weeks before prom for the best results.

  • Avoid adding any new skincare or makeup products to your routine immediately before prom to minimize the risk of an allergic reaction, redness, flaking or dry skin.

A: Try not to stress over it. While you may not be able to banish that zit for good, you can significantly reduce its size and appearance. Apply a clay mask to the spot and leave on overnight (or as long as you can, if it’s the day of the event). Look for masks formulated with ingredients like kaolin clay, bentonite clay, zinc, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. The clay will soak up excess oil and reduce the size of the spot. Then, ice the blemish for about 10 minutes to reduce swelling and apply a clear spot treatment like salicylic acid just before applying your makeup. Finish with a dot of concealer.
A: Its’ best to give your face time to recover from masks, which can leave the skin sensitive and red. Give yourself at least two days. If it’s a brand new product, give it a week to make sure your skin doesn’t develop any adverse reactions.
A: Because indoor tanning isn’t safe for your skin (check out our article on its dangers, here, it’s best to use self-tanner. You’ll want to try out the tanner well in advance to ensure the color is right for you. Also, see if the formula leaves any streaks. Before applying self-tanner, make sure you exfoliate the skin. If you apply too much tanner, use soap and water to wash it off. For areas like the ankles or knees, dip a cotton ball in nail polish remover, and wipe off the excess.
