Although your heels can be dry and flakey any time of the year, this problem tends to worsen during dry, chilly weather. Dry, forced heat, a lack of moisture in the air and binding closed-toe shoes and socks all contribute to dry skin. This leaves the heels looking rough and ragged. Here’s how to banish these problems and keep feet soft and smooth all year round.
Exfoliate first.
Like any other part of the body, exfoliating your dry heels is a must. Invest in a pumice stone or foot scrub to lift dead skin cells and prepare the feet to absorb cream. Do this two to three times a week.
- Renew feet overnight.
Once you’ve exfoliated away the dry skin, drench your heels and feet in moisture by applying a thick cream before bed. Then, slip on a pair of cotton or gel-lined socks to lock in moisture while you sleep. You’ll be amazed at how soft your feet feel when you wake up.
Maintain hydration.
For daytime, apply a lightweight foot cream that absorbs quickly and won’t feel too heavy while you’re wearing socks and shoes.
Care for your cuticles.
Finally, don't forget to give the cuticles a little TLC, as well. Massage your foot cream carefully around each nail to bring those ragged cuticles back to life.
Pamper the feet.
For an extra softening treat, soak the feet and heels in Epsom salt before exfoliating. Then, apply foot cream liberally, carefully coating the heels and toes. Follow with the softening gel socks and hit the hay.
In the morning, your heels and feet will be soft, smooth and refreshed. Repeat this deep treatment once a week to maintain results and ensure your heels are strappy-sandal ready, season after season!
