Are you tired of applying coat after coat of mascara to get long lashes? Want a full set of dramatic lashes to frame your eyes? Discover your options.

Traditional techniques

Until recently, the only way to attain longer lashes was to either use mascara or false eyelashes. Although mascara offers beautiful results, for some, the look isn’t dramatic enough. Traditional false eyelashes, typically glued onto the lash line with adhesive, can be frustrating and time consuming to apply. Great for a night out or a special occasion, false lashes tend to fall off after just one wearing. Even if they don’t fall off, it’s best to remove the false lashes after each use to reduce the risk of irritation.

Lash extensions

Today, semi-permanent and permanent eyelash extensions provide a more natural look than false lashes. Salons offer a plethora of eyelash extensions, made from a variety of materials, including human hair, synthetic fabric and even mink. Because they’re naturally lush and full, you won’t need to apply mascara to highlight the eyes.

So, how are lash extensions different from traditional false lashes? For starters, a trained lash technician applies each lash extension individually onto the lash line. This ensures that the placement is precise and conforms to the shape of the eyelid. Extensions typically last from four to six weeks before needing to be replaced, though some might need touch-ups along the way.

For the initial set of extensions, prices range anywhere from $250 to $500, reports USA Today. Touch-ups can run $60 to $120, according to SheKnows. For a much cheaper option, semi-permanent lash extensions, which can last about 10 days, cost around $50, reports ABC News.

When caring for your new lashes, treat them gently to extend their life and vitality as well as to prevent the breakdown of fibers. Avoid using oil-based makeup removers, which will break down the adhesive that binds the lashes onto the eyelid. Instead, opt for an oil-free eye makeup remover like La Roche Toleriane Eye Make-Up Remover.

Transplant surgery

Long used for burn victims and other patients, eyelash transplants have recently grown in popularity as a cosmetic option. During an eyelash transplant, hair, typically from the scalp, is harvested and then surgically implanted into the hair follicle. Because it’s natural hair, these new lashes grow and act like regular lashes, making them an appealing alternative for someone who wants a more natural look.

Maintenance is necessary: You’ll need to trim and curl your lashes. According to MSNBC, the surgery costs $3,000 per eye. Common side effects include puffy eyes, minor bruising and sties in the eyes. As with any surgery, there’s also a risk of infection. Make sure to research your options and surgeons thoroughly, so you get the most qualified and experienced doctor.
