A growing number of foundation primers have hit the market. But as with any of-the-moment product, we wonder — does it really work, and do I need it in the first place?
Primer basics
Foundation primer acts as an invisible barrier between your skin and makeup. Like a wall primer, foundation primer can fill in small holes (pores) and cracks (fine lines), making it ideal for anyone wanting a smoother finish.
Oily skin types may find that their foundation and blush fade quickly, while those with drier skin notice their makeup creases easily. A primer helps color look truer and fresher for a longer period of time.
Primers also help to prevent makeup meltdown during hot, humid conditions. As an added bonus, several primers feature UV protection.
Are primers necessary?
In her book, Confessions of a Beauty Editor, Linda Wells, Allure magazine’s editor-in-chief, eschews primers as a necessary step. She explains that if a woman doesn’t want the added step of primer in her beauty routine, she could simply slather on moisturizer before makeup application.
On the other hand, many makeup artists believe primers go beyond moisturizing. These lightweight solutions — ranging from creamy gels to water-based fluids — can even out skin tone, extend the wear of makeup, absorb oil, minimize the appearance of pores and even plump wrinkles.
Silicone savvy
Most primers are formulated with silicone, which creates a silky film that fills in fine lines and obvious pores, helps foundation glide on smoothly and imparts a velvety feel. Some formulas contain botanicals such as orange, jasmine, rose, kiwi or aloe extracts to soothe and refresh skin.
Philosophy The Present Skin Protector is a good example of a primer that contains the benefits of silicone and lavender. Another option is Colorescience Line Tamer, which evens out skin tone, fills in lines and wrinkles and can be used on your face, neck and hands. However, be aware that some individuals are sensitive to silicone-based products and can develop blemishes and/or irritated skin.
Making makeup simple
To create a perfect canvas for makeup application, start by applying primer to clean, moisturized skin. Avoiding the eye area, massage the primer onto your face with fingertips or spread onto skin with a fresh sponge. Wait for the primer to completely sink into your skin, especially before using powder foundations to avoid streaks. You can also wear primer by itself for a flawless look.
Scrub-a-dub
Even the best primers can sit atop dead, scaly skin, so remember to exfoliate at least once weekly. For effective exfoliants, try L’Occitane Almond Exfoliating Delicious Paste, Tracie Martyn Enzyme Exfoliant, or Molton Brown Gentle Refine Papain Exfoliator.
All about options
Foundation primers aren’t the only primers on the market. Nowadays you can choose from a bevy of primers for every skin care concern. If your T-zone is too oily, opt for a product that focuses on just that, such as Skindinavia T Zone Makeup Primer.
To prevent eye shadow from creasing and disappearing, try Elizabeth Arden Eye Fix Primer. Eye lash primers elongate and enhance the lashes before you apply mascara, opening up the eyes even more. Some products like blinc Lash Primer also treat your lashes. You can apply the primer before you go to bed to strengthen your lashes, preventing breakage and damage.
