Skincare isn’t all about frilly, flowery, feminine formulas. Today, you’ll find a collection of effective skincare products designed to treat your skin’s unique needs. So why not take advantage? All it takes is a crash course on skincare essentials and you’re off running.
Like infielders in a six-four-three double-play, skincare products are designed to work together. Here's your all-star line-up:
Cleanser
- What it does: As the first step in your skincare routine, a cleanser removes oily residue, dirt and bacteria. Never use body or hand soap on your face — these contain harsh detergents, deodorants or other ingredients that can irritate your face.
- It’s a winner if: Your face is sweaty, grimy, greasy or dirty.
- Leave it if: Do you want dirty skin? It’s essential for everyone.
- What to look for: Use a foam, liquid or gel cleanser to remove dirt and grime without over-drying skin, advises Karyn Seigel-Maier for Better Nutrition magazine. Try Pevonia FOR HIM Aqua-Gel Foaming Cleanser.
Toner
- What it does: After washing your face, toner removes any traces of cleanser, dirt and bacteria that might remain. Depending on the formula, it can also moisturize the skin, clean pores and restore your skin’s moisture balance. You might feel a slight tingling on your skin — this is normal and just means the toner is doing its job.
- It’s a winner if: You want a deep clean to make sure no residue remains on your face.
- Leave it if: You have dry or sensitive skin, because some toners can be harsh or drying for these skin types.
- What to look for: Witch hazel and botanicals (think aloe vera extract and chamomile) are often found in toners to help re-condition, soften and soothe skin. For products that are less drying and less intense, choose alcohol-free toners. Anthony Logistics Alcohol-Free Toner is an effective option.
Scrub/exfoliator
- What it does: An exfoliating scrub removes tough, dead, dry or flaky skin. Dry flakes and dead skin can clog your pores, which in turn can cause breakouts. Facial scrubs are available for different skin types. You normally don’t need to use a scrub every day — in fact, doing so can irritate your skin. Several times a week is ideal.
- It’s a winner if: You're prone to dry, rough patches or acne.
- Leave it if: You have sensitive skin that’s easily irritated.
- What to look for: Yonka for Men Foam Scrub has natural ingredients to remove dead skin and prevent breakouts.
Spot treatment
- What it does: When you shave, some hairs can actually curl around and grow back under your skin. These are ingrown hairs, which can be bumpy and painful and lead to infection and scarring. A spot treatment helps to prevent or relieve ingrown hairs.
- It’s a winner if: You’re prone to ingrown hairs or irritation when you shave.
- Leave it if: You have a long, full beard and don’t shave.
- What to look for: Alpha hydroxy acids, like those found in Bliss Ingrown Hair Eliminating Peeling Pads, help to remove layers of dry skin cells that cause ingrown hairs.
Aftershave
- What it does: It moisturizes, soothes nicks or cuts and leaves you smelling good.
- It’s a winner if: You want to calm your skin and smell fresh after shaving.
- Leave it if: There's really no need to leave it! Just pick the right formula for your skin type.
- What to look for: Peter Thomas Roth Ultra-Lite Multi-Tasking After Shave Balm is cooling and soothing but also non-greasy for oilier skin. If you have sensitive skin, try a botanical or alcohol-free aftershave, like AHAVA Men’s Soothing After Shave Moisturizer.
Moisturizer
- What it does: Moisturizer hydrates and protects skin. Some moisturizers contain sunscreen to shield skin from harmful UV rays that accelerate aging and cause skin cancer. Also, you’ll find different formulas designed according to skin type. You can apply your moisturizer as needed, especially if you have dry skin. If you’re prone to oily skin, use less lotion.
- It’s a winner if: You have dry skin that feels rough, tight or itchy.
- Leave it if: Note that while all skin needs moisture, over-moisturizing will only make oily skin worse. Also, keep in mind, men have larger pores — and therefore more oil — in their skin than women do. Go for moisturizers that say “oil-free” or “noncomedogenic.”
- What to look for: Try AHAVA Men’s Protective Moisturizing Fluid SPF 15 to moisturize, soothe and prevent sun damage. Murad Man Defense SPF 15 is oil-free and also protects against UV damage. If you’re an athlete and sweat it out on the field, toss a tube of Jack Black Sun Guard Oil-Free Very Water/Sweat-Resistant Sunscreen SPF 30+ in your gym bag. You’ll get lasting protection without sunscreen dribbling down into your eyes as you sweat. Always remember to apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before heading out and reapply every two hours.

A: If your face is primarily dry and feels tight, then your skin type is dry. On the other hand, if it's predominantly shiny, then you have oily skin. If just your T-zone (that includes your forehead, nose and chin) is oily, then you’ve got combination skin.

A: Definitely— you still need to nourish the skin beneath your beard. Also, ingredients like botanicals and oils found in moisturizers keep your beard soft and healthy.
