What is it? Kinetin, also known as N6-Furfuryladenine, is used in anti-aging skincare products because of its ability to improve the appearance of mature and photodamaged skin. A cytokinin, kinetin is an essential growth factor found in green leafy plants that prevents leaves from aging, keeping them plump and firm.

As a powerful antioxidant, kinetin is believed to help in preventing free radical damage. Studies have suggested kinetin is effective in improving hyperpigmentation, promoting an even skin tone, smoothing the skin's texture and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. By helping the skin retain up to 25 percent more moisture, kinetin also promotes a healthy and hydrated complexion.

You'll find it in: Kinetin can be found in everything from creams and lotions to serums and eye treatments. The popular skincare line Kinerase contains 0.1 percent kinetin. Kinerase products are dye-free, fragrance-free, noncomedogenic (won't clog pores) and don't cause increased sun sensitivity. In addition, because kinetin products are hypoallergenic and contain anti-inflammatory properties, they're ideal for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Our Product Picks: Consider the Kinerase Ultimate Regimen Kit, which features four must-have anti-aging items: Day Moisturizer, Night Moisturizer, Intensive Eye Cream and the C6 Peptide Intensive Treatment Serum. For a lightweight daily moisturizer, choose Kinerase Lotion, great for boosting skin hydration while improving overall skin tone. Its delicate consistency makes it ideal for wearing under sunscreen and makeup.

What to expect: Kinerase products are gentle, yet highly effective. If used as directed, you should see results following four to six weeks. Because kinetin is non-exfoliating, you won't experience the dryness and peeling that's commonly associated with aggressive anti-aging treatments. Over time, you should notice a more balanced complexion that feels hydrated and looks luminous.

Who should avoid it: If you're pregnant or lactating, talk with your doctor to make sure kinetin products are safe to use. To reiterate, kinetin is also gentle and effective for all skin types.
